Hey y’all, it’s Krista with SaddleBox and for today’s video I’m going to give you an exercise that helps with horses that are head-shy.

So when we’re talking about a horse that’s head-shy, that usually means they don’t like their head being messed with or their face. So usually they don’t like you touching them on the nose, they don’t like movement around their eyes, and movement around here.

A lot of the times, you’ll get a horse that’s fine here but their nose is weird, or they’re okay with you touching their nose but they don’t really like being touched up here. Maybe their ears even. So that’s basically what we mean by a horse that’s head-shy and the exercise I’m going to show you really helps with that.

So all you’ll need for this exercise is a halter and lead rope, and basically all you’re going to do is kind of act like you’re playing jump rope, and you’re going to kind of throw it over their head like this. So basically you’re going to be in a position where they can’t hit you with their face or anything, but you can start getting them used to movement and touching everything.

An Exercise to Help with Head-Shy Horses

The sloppier you are with this, the better. You don’t want to be too light with it, you want them to really be desensitized to everything on their face. So this is an exercise I really like to do not only with horses that are head-shy, but horses that are just spooky in general because they’re getting used to a rope flying around their face and their eyes and also touching their ears and everything. So yeah, a great exercise for that as well.

Alright y’all, that’s it for this one. I hope you enjoyed it and I’ll see you in the next video. Bye guys!
