Hey guys, it’s Krista with SaddleBox and in today’s video I’m going to be talking about the difference between electric tape and rubber bands.

Alright, so this is Dexter, he’s a two-year-old stud colt and he has a very luxurious mane. And as you can see, we’ve used electrical tape to secure the braid. So a few things about electric tape. It differs from elastics because it doesn’t damage the hair every time you put in a braid or a ponytail, whatever it may be, so that’s really nice. But they do come out.

I don’t know if you can see this braid is starting to come out, probably because he rubbed it, and this right here is starting to unravel. So they do unravel a lot quicker than an elastic would. They’re also not very user-friendly to use, especially if your horse doesn’t want to stand still for braids, it’s kind of hard taping and untaping and cutting off a chunk of tape for a braid.

Braiding a Horse's Mane: Should You Use Elastics or Electrical Tape?

So elastics tend to do a little more damage to the hair, but they last longer than electric tape would, but electric tape definitely preserves the hair a little bit more.

In my opinion, I don’t see that big of a difference when I do braids in my horses’ manes and tails. I prefer elastic over the electrical tape, but that’s just a personal preference.

So really the determining factor will be if you’re willing to constantly redo your horse’s mane every time a braid comes out and be able to use the tape efficiently and take the time to do that, or if you want to use elastics it’ll last longer and you won’t find yourself constantly re-braiding their mane and tail.

But like I said, it’s going to be personal preference, so if you have the time to do it, then I recommend doing it; however, it doesn’t make that big of a difference if you just want to use elastics.

Alright y’all, that’s it for this one. I hope you enjoyed it and I’ll see you in the next video. Bye guys!
