There are lots of great options out there for ordering a great Christmas or birthday present for that special horse lover in your life (we’re partial to a SaddleBox subscription, of course). But creating your own D.I.Y. horse gift is a great way to show someone that you really put extra thought and work into something unique just for them.  Here are some horse owner gift projects that you can make at home as a special surprise for your favorite equestrian!

1. Homemade Horse Treats

Making horse treats in your own kitchen is a lot easier than you might think! SaddleBox has some great horse treat recipes here on our website, and none of them are very complicated or expensive. And you don’t have to limit yourself to just one recipe. Why not make a variety of different treats and put them into a beautiful gift basket? There are lots of possibilities!

2. Decorative Horseshoe Wall Hangar

Horseshoe crafts are great DIY gift ideas, and you’d be surprised how much you can do with them. The easiest project is to simply paint them and use a hot glue gun to add twine for hanging on the wall, but there are many more possibilities. Adding decorative beads and gems, turning them into picture frames, and using them as jewelry or coat hangars are just a few other things you can do. And if you want to get really ambitious with your project, you could even weld them together to create larger sculptures.

3. Handmade Horse Lead Ropes

It might sound intimidating to learn how to make your own horse tack like lead ropes and similar items, but it’s actually something you could do pretty easily. Check out this video on how to use paracord to make your own DIY lead ropes as a gift. These might take a bit more time to learn to make and to craft on your own (especially if you plan on making a long lead rope). But it’s a present that will last a long time, will be very unique, and that your friend or loved one will really appreciate.

4. Horse Leg Polo Wraps

These are some of our favorite DIY gifts to make for horse lovers! They’re fun, practical and can even be funny if you want them to be. You can make polo wraps out of any fabric that you can buy at your local craft store. If your equestrian has a favorite sports team or superhero, you could even make polos featuring that design! Here’s a tutorial on how to make your own leg wraps at home for much less than it would cost to buy them as a present.

5. Horse Hair Keychain

Imagine how surprised that special equestrian will be if you give them a keychain make out of hair from their own horse’s mane or tail! It’s the kind of personalized gift that a horse owner would love for their birthday or Christmas. Here’s the catch, though: you need to get some of their horse’s hair first. I would suggest asking them permission ahead of time, and making it clear that you’re working on something special for them. Here’s a quick how-to on creating that awesome keychain tassel with horse hair.
