Hey guys, it’s Krista with SaddleBox and in today’s video, I’m going to show you how to measure your horse’s height with a measuring stick, and if you don’t have a measuring stick, a tape measure.

So I have my measuring stick here, I just got this off of a horse website. It’s really simple to use, you just bring it up like this, and when you are at your horse’s withers, you push this button and bring it down to their height. So the first thing you’re going to want to do is be sure you’re on a flat surface – flat and level. This actually has a level on it so it can tell you if you’re on a level surface right here.

Now that we’re on a level surface, I’m going to want to make sure my horse is standing nice and square. You don’t want them standing out or standing too far in. So she is standing nice and square. Okay, so I’m going to make sure that my stick is in parallel to her leg here, just like this, and then I can start to adjust it. So we are level, now I can bring it down, and she is 15’2”.

Easy Ways to Measure Your Horse's Height

Okay, so if you don’t have one of those fancy measuring sticks, all you need is a tape measure. Now, this way is not as accurate, but you can get a really good idea of how tall your horse is. My horse is standing nice and square. I’m going to be measuring from her front foot to her withers right here.

So I’m going to get my tape measure out, make sure it’s nice and parallel to her foot and the ground like so. You can’t necessarily bend the tape measure because that’s not going to give you a good reading, so you sort of have to eyeball it. So she was at 61” with the tape measure, so all you have to do is get on your smart phone if you don’t want to do math in your head like me, and type in “inches to hands” on Google and it’ll give you this little chart here.

Then all you have to do is type in 61” and it gives you the proper hand measurement, and according to this she is 15.25, which is basically 15.3 hands, which is what that said.

Alright y’all, I hope you enjoyed it. That’s it for this video and I’ll see you in the next one. Bye guys!
