One of the more popular Internet horse searches begs the simple, sweet question, “Can a horse love you?” The short answer, of course, is a resounding yes.

can horses feel love

We know that animal love is a different emotion than that of human love. And we also know that the love you feel as a human can’t be returned in equal fashion by an animal. I mean, let’s face it, he can’t hug and pat you, too. That doesn’t diminish the fact that your horse most certainly can love you in his own way. Here’s how.

Watch for signs

Horses will develop trust through contact, riding, and grooming. As a result, they’ll show signs of gratitude when you approach them. That affection will look different than that of a dog or cat. Horses generally nicker when they’re content, sort of a vibrating sound that comes from his vocal cords with its mouth closed. They’ll also use their head and nuzzle, sometimes lick. They won’t always appreciate a hug around the neck or touch to the face, so approach them with caution.

Love involves trust

A horse needs to trust you in order to open up and grow in a relationship. So if you were to approach them aggressively and shout commands like you might do to a barking dog – that probably won’t work. Putting your hand on their flank and speaking to them gently will go a long way. Horses are always on guard, and that’s because they’re prey animals by nature. As long as you don’t rush it, you’re giving your horse a better chance to love you in the long run.

Spend time with him

One of the best ways to bond and grow trust is to groom your horse. It’s a relaxing activity for them, just like petting a dog. Another is by walking your horse. The walk is beneficial to both of you because it’s excellent exercise. Horses learn to interact with us when we spend a lot of time with them. And don’t we like to spend time with people that we love?

Is he obedient?

If your horse respects your commands, then he’ll try to do everything he can to follow your orders. This isn’t to say that a disobedient horse doesn’t love you, but it is one way they show affection. If your horse doesn’t always cooperate, don’t give up, and don’t think for a minute that he doesn’t love you.
