Hey everybody, it’s Krista with SaddleBox and for today’s video I’m going to be showing you how to make a mash for your horse.

Okay, so you’re probably wondering what a mash is and why does my horse need to eat it? Well, a mash is just basically any grain or alfalfa pellet or any pellet that you’ve added water to and you’ve let it get into that mash consistency so it’s easier for them to eat. Horses with teeth problems or older horses, horses with digestive issues, or maybe a horse that just is more prone to choking, they all could benefit from a mash consistency grain.

Okay, so I have added water to my grain here and I am going to let it sit for about ten minutes just so it can all absorb. I literally just did it so it still looks like grain. So you want to give it at least ten minutes to let it get into that consistency and you can also see if you need to add more water or not.

How to Make a Mash for Your Horse

Alright, it’s been about ten minutes and it is the consistency we want. As you can see, it is very mushy, very easy to break apart, so that’s where we want it at. Now, I would usually drain the water a little bit more, but I am going to leave it because when your horse starts eating, it’ll start to dry up, so leaving a little extra water in there helps you not have to add more later.

And plus, for this horse, she’s been on a mash diet for a while now, so it’s not like she’s going to see the water and not want to eat it. But if you are just starting your horse on a mash diet, if you bring them something like this with a bunch of water in it, they may be like, I don’t really want to eat that. So if it’s their first time eating it, you may want to drain it and add more water as they’re eating.

Alright, that’s it for this one, I hope you enjoyed it and I’ll see you in the next video.
