Hey everybody, it’s Krista with SaddleBox and for today’s video I’m going to show you how to vet wrap your horse’s leg or shoulder or really anywhere that they have a cut.

So if your horse gets a cut anywhere on their leg or maybe by their hoof, I know a lot of times they can cut their bulbs up, and it’s not as serious to where you’d call a vet out but you just need to cover it up, or maybe it is serious and you’re wrapping it until the vet can get out here, here’s what you’re going to do. So you will need some cotton or gauze.

I like this stuff because it’s really thick and very absorbent. And then of course vet wrap, and I always use betadine solution just to clean everything out. This is probably one of the best ones you can use here, and that’s going to ensure that bacteria doesn’t get into the cut and cause infection.

How to Vet Wrap a Horse's Cut

So for this horse, let’s say she gets a cut right here on her ankle and I need to have the vet come out but they can’t come out for another hour so I’m just going to wrap it while I wait. What I would do is get some betadine, put it on, or I can even put it on the cotton here, and then make sure that the bleeding stops.

Of course you’re going to hold that there until the bleeding stops or you can wrap away if the vet is already coming out and on their way. So I’m going to take my vet wrap and just start to get that cotton that we have there onto the right place. And you want to make sure that it’s tight but obviously not cutting off their circulation.

So you want to make sure your cotton isn’t going to move but you’re not cutting your horse’s foot off. So I’m going to make sure I have a good grip on that right there, and then I’m going to go up a little bit and come down to where it’s nice and supported in these areas so this area doesn’t get messed up. And then at this point, I would probably cut, and then with vet wrap of course, you don’t have to get tape unless you want to be extra secure, it just sticks to itself like so.

Okay, so say your horse gets a cut somewhere here where you can’t really wrap it and it doesn’t require stitches so your vet doesn’t need to come out, but you want to put something on it to where it’s not just bleeding and open for the flies. This stuff is really cool, it’s a liquid Band-Aid. All you do is spray it on. So say she had a cut from here to here and it obviously doesn’t need stitches, but I want to cover it up. So all I do is take this stuff and spray away.

Alright, that’s it for this one. I hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll see you in the next video. Bye guys!
